Every parent develops preferences for particular baby-related products as they make their way through their own adventure in parenting--things they find especially helpful and would recommend to other parents.
Here are some of my personal "must haves" for navigating the first few weeks with a brand new squishy:
The Happiest Baby on the Block: The New Way to Calm Crying and Help Your Newborn Baby Sleep Longer by Harvey Karp : I've read nearly every sleep related book written by nearly every sleep "expert" known to man. For the first three months of baby's life--especially if you're blessed with a fussy, high-need, or colicky peanut--this is THE only one I'd bother with. Karp's techniques do wonders for soothing and they "make sense" in both a practical/logical way AND in an intuitive way. Most sleep gurus (including Weissbluth and Sears) agree that in the first weeks of life babies need oodles of soothing and sometimes lots of help in falling and staying asleep. So you might as well focus on honing your soothing skills let this book be your guide to that end.
A handful of good quality swaddling blankets. Not those super thin, too small receiving blanket jobbies that come in packs of four or five. But rather something like this: Ultimate Swaddling Blanket Or better yet, this: Miracle Blanket .
For breastfeeding support at your fingertips: The Nursing Mother's Companion. The best resource book for breastfeeding mommies.
Bebe Au Lait nursing covers are the bomb! Having one gave me the freedom to get out of the house and extending day trips by facilitating discreet nursing while out and about during the baby-can-sleep-anywhere-but-needs-to-eat-every-couple-hours stage.
If "wearing" your baby floats your boat (and it did mine). I looooved the pouches from Kangaroo Korner. Though pouches wouldn't be my carrier of choice for older infants, I was so happy to have a couple for carrying Buggaboo close as a squishy newborn.
