Ok...so I have to get something off my chest. It's been bothering me for a while and yet I've never said anything about it. At least not out from under my breath. It's hugely important too, so be sure to listen closely and care lots about what I'm about to say.
In regards to utensil placement in the dishwasher....I just can't understand why anyone would place the utensils handle-down in the utensil basket. You know, with the tips of butter-knives and steak knives fiercely facing upward, with prongs of the forks threatening to stab you if you use any kind of haste in unloading the dishwasher.
It seems to me much more logical--not to mention sanitary--to place said utensils handle up. So that you can grab the utensils by the handle with ease and and speed and efficiency while unloading. And loading too, come to think of it--MUCH easier when done handle-up: you can practically throw the utensils in the basket. Try throwing utensils into the basket with their "heads" up. No easy task. It's all about physics. And safety. No pokes in the fingers, no loss of fingertip. And cleanliness. When unloading the freshly cleaned sparkling spoons that have been placed handle-up, you do not run the risk of smearing your (germy) hands all over what will soon be shoveling food into your mouth.
Now, if you're one of those people who places the utensils handle-down in the utensil basket, rest assured your affinity for risky and potentially unsanitary utensil placement says nothing about your overall character or values, so don't worry there are no judgements being passed here.
This is about me. Not you. This is just one of my quirky irks. And I thought I'd share.
I love your blog, Sara! This is too much fun. I have to admit that I am one of those who put utensils in the dishwasher handle side down. But I don't do them all this way. I alternate within the basket compartments, because I don't want the spoons and forks to nest, thus preventing them from getting clean. However, in light of our pride and joy becoming mobile and thinking that every time I open the dishwasher, he needs to make a beeline for it, pull himself up on it, and attempt to grab whatever dishes he can get his hands on, it now becomes a safety issue to put utensils handle up. If he happens to grab something, much safer that he grabs a handle, and not a knife blade or sharp fork tines! I might still alternate the spoons, though. :-)
